Statement from Asia Hotel residents against Sequel 138 condos

Hello.  I am one of 35 people who live in the Asia Hotel at 139 E Hastings, right behind the Pantages/sequel 138 condo project.

My crappy hotel is run by the Mah Society but they are planning to renovate and kick all of us out soon.  For sure they will be charging higher rents to new people who move in.  Most of us in the Asia used to be homeless.  We’re really afraid of that happening again.  Some of us won’t be able to handle a move. Christopher who lives in the Asia Hotel said that he can’t imagine getting a better room than the one that he has now.  He doesn’t want to move out of the area.  He said that he came to what he thought would be the worst area in the country but he cleaned up here because of the services.  He also said that those services are now being threatened by all the high end stuff coming in.

As Asia residents, we do not understand why this condo project will only have 10% apartments at old age pension and welfare rate.  We need 100% subsidized housing at welfare rate near the services that we need.   We do not understand why the city and province are not building social housing that we can afford to live in.  Why are they building housing for the rich while they make us homeless or try to push us out of the area?

As Rick, an Asia resident, said:

“All the yuppies are coming in to the Downtown Eastside.  It’s just a big money grab.  It happened at Woodwards and it will happen here.  They want profit and we’re the collateral damage.”

We stand with all the people here today and all the residents in the buildings around the Pantages and call for 100% social housing at the welfare and old age pension rates now!
